Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Gold Sovereign Tester Tool Card?

The Gold Sovereign Tester Tool Card is a precision-engineered, portable and convenient gauge designed to help verify the physical dimensions of gold sovereign coins. It allows you to check a coin's diameter, thickness, and weight reference to help identify whether it matches the expected specifications of a genuine sovereign which are included within the tool design for quick reference use, wherever you are.

Which coins does this tester work with?

The tester is designed for genuine British Gold Sovereign coins, including:

  • Full Sovereigns

  • Half Sovereigns

  • Quarter Sovereigns

How do I use the tester?

Using the tester is simple:

  1. Place your coin into the matching diameter recess.

  2. Insert the coin into the thickness slot to check its width - The coin should be able to pass all the way through to the other side.

  3. Weigh the coin using accurate digital jewellery or mini scales (not included) and compare the weight with the values shown on the tester.

  4. If the diameter, thickness, and weight all match the expected specifications, the coin is highly likely to be genuine.

What kind of fake sovereigns are there?

Counterfeit sovereigns come in several forms. Older jeweller's copies were often made in 21ct gold for jewellery rather than as genuine Royal Mint coins and can look indistinguishable to the naked eye. Contemporary counterfeits were produced during the sovereign's circulation to deceive merchants, while modern fakes are often manufactured overseas using base metals with gold plating or lower-purity alloys.

Although some counterfeits can look convincing, they almost always differ in their diameter, thickness, or weight due to variations in the gold purity or alloy used. Checking these physical characteristics is one of the quickest and most effective ways to identify coins that may require further professional examination.

Why should I use a physical tester?

A physical gauge provides a fast, convenient way to screen coins before buying, selling, or adding them to your collection. It's a useful and quick process that can help identify coins that require further investigation/ scrutiny.

Is this suitable for coin dealers and collectors?

Yes. The tester is ideal for collectors, dealers, investors, jewellers, and anyone who regularly handles British gold sovereign coins.

Why is weight checked separately?

The tester provides the correct weight specifications, but you will need a set of accurate digital scales (not included) to verify your coin's weight. Counterfeit coins often have incorrect weights even if they appear visually convincing. Weighing and comparing to the weight specifications gives another layer of security to your assessment of the coin.

Are digital scales included?

No. The tester card does not include weighing scales. For the most accurate results, we recommend using precision digital jewellery scales capable of measuring to at least 0.01 g. These can be found easily online and on the high street by searching for "accurate mini scales".

What material is the tester made from?

Each tester is manufactured in the UK using a high-grade, low-tolerance polymer. The material is lightweight, durable, and engineered for consistent accuracy.

Is the tester made in the UK?

Yes. Every Gold Sovereign Tester Tool Card is designed and manufactured in the United Kingdom.

Is the tester suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. The tester is designed to be quick and easy to use, making it suitable for both experienced collectors and those new to collecting British sovereigns.

Will it damage my coins?

No. The tester is made from a smooth polymer designed for repeated use. When used carefully, it should not damage or scratch your coins. Take extra care when handling proofs in any situation.

Can this tester detect gold purity?

No. The tester checks a coin's physical dimensions and weight only. It does not measure gold purity or metal composition. For confirmation of metal content, professional XRF testing is recommended. Purity testing can also be carried out using invasive methods such as acid testing, however we do not recommend this for coins as the damage can eliminate any numismatic value from the coin.

Does this guarantee that my coin is genuine?

The only non destructive way to confirm to 100% accuracy, is through the use of an X-ray fluorescence tool which can cost over £5000 to buy and up to £100 per coin when paying for XRF testing services. Our tester is designed as a physical screening tool using the same technology that the Victorian and Edwardian coin specialists placed their confidence in. While matching the correct dimensions and weight provides a strong indication that a coin is genuine 22ct gold, no single test can guarantee authenticity. For complete verification, in the event that your sovereign fails our test, professional testing such as XRF analysis is recommended.

Can genuine sovereigns fail the test?

Genuine sovereigns can, in rare cases, vary slightly due to differences in minting, year of issue, wear, or manufacturing tolerances. A coin that does not fit the tester should be referred for further XRF screening.

Are the coins shown in the product images included?

No. The product includes the Gold Sovereign Tester Tool Card only. Any coins shown in photographs are for demonstration purposes and are not included with the purchase.
